CHILDREN TURN AN ECO-LESSON INTO A SONG, USING CLIMATE VISIONS 10 PLEDGES’

Bridge Schools are currently involved in a collaborative music project led by Nick Hart to co-create choral compositions which will be performed at The Eden Project by some of Cornwall’s finest choirs next year with the theme of environmental well-being the inspiration.

Bridge Schools is a Multi Academy Trust committed to a broad, engaging and creative curriculum, therefore the opportunity to be involved in a collaborative music project on the theme of environmental well-being was something we embraced whole-heartedly. Our children benefited hugely from the experts in their field who have been involved, developing a deep and meaningful commitment to reducing climate change as well as enjoying the shared experience of song writing and performance.

As part of the project, children from across our 14 primary academies met Luci Isaacson, leading climatologist, to develop their understanding of the key environmental issues challenging our planet. Luci supported them in creating pledges to make small changes which would help reduce climate change. The children were particularly intrigued by Luci’s electric car and played a role in plotting her route from school to school to reduce mileage and therefore the carbon footprint.

Working with talented musician Matt Douglas from Cornwall Music Education Hub, the children were then supported to transform their ideas into songs with the ambition of inspiring change.

On 21st January, over 200 pupils from across Bridge Schools Trust performed at St Martin’s Church. It was a magical opportunity for the children to share and celebrate their hard work as well as spread key environmental messages through the medium of song.

One of our teachers commented, “It has been a fantastic experience for the children. The lyrics are inspirational and the singing very impressive. Joining together at St Martin’s church has provided the children with the opportunity to meet with others across the Trust as part of this creative journey.”

A pupil from one school said “It was really exciting! We felt quite nervous about singing today, but with Matt’s help, we did it! We’ve really enjoyed singing with other Bridge Schools children today.”

“The children were really impressive, very inspirational, and in such a short space of time they worked really hard and should be proud of themselves,” expressed another Teacher.

Chief Executive Adrian Massey commented, “It was lovely to see the children from each of our 14 schools walk forward so confidently to sing their school song to everyone in the church. What an incredible opportunity for them to sing with 200 other Bridge Schools children in such a beautiful setting. We are indebted to Nick Hart for organising the event with Matt Douglas from Cornwall Music Hub.”
