Climate Skills through Creativity Programme

For individuals, teachers and businesses in Cornwall.

About the Programme

Our cutting-edge Climate Skills through Creativity programme uses an innovative mix of advanced technology, real-world learning, and expert-led training.
It enables participants to build resilience against the impacts of climate change and inspires them to innovate around mitigation and adaptation.
It’s designed for everyone—from those new to climate issues to seasoned professionals—and provides practical and inspiring experiences.

This is for Cornwall-based individuals and businesses looking to upskill for storm and heat related impacts and a new (good news) renewable energy led economy.

This is your opportunity to future-proof your home or business, engage with innovative solutions, and become part of Cornwall’s journey to a more sustainable and resilient future.

Don’t miss this opportunity to have a wider outlook if you are looking to buy a new home.

Go ahead and starting planning - PLAN 2 THINGS that work with your diary. Email when is the best time for you (see Scheduling tab below):

  1. Course workshops (you need to make time between each workshop to do small assignments)
  2. Everyone has a 30 minute 1:1 flood risk snapshot at a time suitable to you (from the options that will be sent to you)

FAQ & Course Details

Participants can expect to learn climate science from a leading expert, enjoy hearing about a significant past climate event nearby, which provides a vision for the future in the same place. They will understand and trust the scientific process and why it’s important in terms of their personal resilience both at home and at work. For their course assignments participants will identify the risks and formulate strategies to counteract them, including implementation plans.

Everyone! Whether you have zero or 30+ years’ experience, you’ll learn something new and be inspired.

Climate skills are critical for adapting to career trends, managing risks like flooding, working with nature-based solutions, or preparing for Great British Energy. Global climate goals and related economics are making demands for climate change training very real. There is also a personal responsibility, to look after your family and home, the 1:1 session will enable you to accurately assess the risks and formulate a plan to mitigate them.

  • Climate science & risk planning
  • Flood resilience products
  • Flood risk assessment & planning
  • Policy insight (Mission Control) & green jobs
  • Nature-based solutions
  • Carbon Reduction Planning
  • Climate adaptation and mitigation communication & myth-busting

Live Workshops 1-6 via Zoom, using work packs, posted out the week before.

Wednesday:

  • 9:30–11:00 AM – Workshop 1 + assignment
  • 1:30–2:00 PM – Workshop 2 + assignment

Thursday:

  • 30-min (time TBA) 1:1 Workshop 3: Flood Risk Snapshot + assignment

Friday:

  • 9:30–10:00 AM – Workshop 4 + assignment
  • 11:30 AM–12:00 PM – Workshop 5 + assignment
  • 3:00–4:00 PM – Workshop 6: Completion

Total course time:  8-12 hours

Your coursework is marked after the final event. Upon completion a Climate Skills Continuing Professional Development certificate will be sent to you along with an invitation to further training within the programme. This course has been independently valued at £500 – £600.

The course links to green careers, as graduates will have an essential holistic view on climate resilience and will be aware of what is needed to maximise opportunities and navigate managing the risks for any project, or employer.

By linking everything learnt together it positions graduates to innovate but also, if needed, understand and acquire the further skills and qualifications that might be required.

Graduates who wish to continue further studies after the Programme, can focus on a new interest and book with partners for further related study.

The UK is facing a “green skills gap,” meaning there’s a shortage of workers with the skills needed for the green transition and climate change adaptation. We need more people entering the field of climate risk management and flood defence, and a significant number of roles – both current and those that will be created in the near future – to expedite the Clean Power 2030 Action Plan.

Message from Luci Isaacson

Join us soon—this course is engaging, practical, and has been thoroughly enjoyed by all past participants. In just 8 to 12 hours, you’ll gain vital local knowledge and the confidence to take action at home, work, and in your community. You’ll walk away more resilient and ready to lead. We need innovative thinkers like you—and you will be one.

With over 25 years of experience in environmental work, and 15 specifically in flood resilience, I developed this course through a Defra Pathfinder project grounded in climate change research from two degrees at Exeter University. I’ve worked closely with communities, policymakers, and first responders, and I know people only get prepared when they understand the bigger picture, trust the effort behind it, and feel personally connected. That’s what this course delivers.

The response to the Defra Pathfinder was so strong, participants asked us to turn it into a CPD qualification—so we did.

I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to my colleagues for their invaluable support, with particular appreciation to Tom Parry from Fugro for going above and beyond!

Please join us to start – or further – your Climate Skills journey; your planet needs you now!
